Letting Go of Negative Thoughts and Beliefs - What
It Means
to Let Go
I received a number of emails lately that advise you
how to "let go" of the limiting beliefs and pessimistic
thinking that can get you down. I think that because it's a new
year, and one that will probably be quite challenging for many,
many are focusing on this idea. Also, it's one of the concepts the
"Law of Attraction" relies on.
To curtail your negative thinking and beliefs, one life coach recommended
writing them down on a piece of paper and then setting fire to them
in your fireplace. Another said to simply "let the negative
thinking pass by" and then focus on feeling positive. But what
if the negative thoughts are more than just thoughts? What if they're
actually your reality? What do you do then?
I have the "advantage" of actually going through a situation
like this. In 2002 I began to think about writing a book (actually,
I was asked to write a book, but I won't go into this minor detail
now). The problem was, I was not a trained writer. I was an introverted,
left-brained engineer and I knew that my writing was mediocre at
best. I wasn't even aware of what I was supposed to write about.
The pessimistic thoughts in my head, thoughts such as, "Your
writing sucks and you know it" and, "You've got nothing
to say" were not just thoughts--they were my reality. I had
every reason to take them seriously. Then in 2006, when I showed
my third draft to my editor, they were still my reality. "Write
a how-to book instead," is what she said. My less-than-positive
thinking was confirmed by an expert!
I was annoyed and agitated, of course, yet I knew that I had no
choice but to keep going on my path. I had a vision of a book done
well and I kept focusing daily on developing my writing capacity.
I had my less-than-favorable thoughts (and my "lower vibration"
emotions) and I kept going, just as you can be afraid and still
keep going. The important difference is this: you can have your
fear and your negative thinking, but your fear and negative thoughts
don't have to have you. You can take them along with you, and you
can even use them to your advantage.
Anyway, my pessimistic thoughts--and the progress that I was seeing
over time--motivated me to learn and to do my best. And as my capacity
developed, those negative thoughts lessened. I suppose if I had
simply ignored them I wouldn't have worked as diligently and therefore,
not progressed as much. And now I can actually say that I am grateful
for those negative thoughts.
