The Pain-Pleasure Principle

Monitor Your Feelings. All entities, from single-celled amoebae up to complex human beings, have a natural inclination to seek pleasure and avoid pain. This Pain-Pleasure Principle is the chief motivating factor in behavior. Whatever we are doing, we are doing it because we believe it will make us feel better. We are pleasure-seeking, relief-seeking beings, consciously or unconsciously trying to strengthen our connection with Source Energy. Regardless of how misguided we may view some of the ways people seek pleasure, it is still the motivation behind every action ever taken by human beings.


Your Emotional Guidance System lets you know if you’re directing your life toward pain or toward pleasure. Like a smoke detector beeping to warn you that its batteries are low, negative emotion from your Emotional Guidance System is an indication that your connection to Source Energy is weak, that you’re headed away from pleasure and toward pain. Your Emotional Guidance System is ever-vigilant to inform you when your Thought-Feelings are not serving you. Negative emotion is a warning that redirection is in order – that you’re headed toward something you do not want. A thought of something you do not want brings forth negative emotion and negative emotion warns you that the thoughts you are choosing are not in harmony with Well-Being.


Instead of worrying about every idle thought that comes to mind, all you really need to do is notice how you feel. Then, by virtue of the Pain-Pleasure Principle, you will instinctively nurture thoughts that are pleasurable and avoid thoughts that are painful. Feeling good means you’re on track to happiness. Feeling bad means you’re headed toward unhappiness.


Strengthen the Connection. The smoke detector doesn’t ask itself “What’s wrong?” when it starts beeping. It doesn’t take drugs to numb itself against the message. It doesn’t find other beeping smoke detectors to commiserate with. The answer for the smoke detector as well as for us is simple – Strengthen the Connection! Discomfort is an indication of a weakened connection to Source. The question is not – “What’s wrong with me?” The question is – “What’s the best way for me to feel better right here right now?”


As the physical extension of Source, your natural state is pure high vibrational Joy. When you’re connected to Source, you’re Whole – the physical You and the non-physical You are joined in the Dance of Life. When you’re fully aligned with and connected to Source, you feel love, joy, freedom, empowerment. You’re tuned in, tapped in, turned on! Negative emotion is an internal message alerting you that you’re out of alignment with Source – that you’re saying No to the Joy of Life. Trust your feelings. They’re offering you guidance to help you get back to your essence, to reconnect with Well-Being, to feel pleasure and avoid pain!
